Skin Conditions
The three most common skin conditions seen in a naturopathic practice include
acne, eczema and psoriasis. Their causes and presentation vary, but as a
naturopathic doctor I recognize they are all more than just “skin deep” in several
ways. Acne is a condition that can present anywhere on the body in varying severity
often seen as whiteheads, blackheads and reddened skin. This condition commonly
starts in adolescence, although it may persist into adult years. Eczema generally
presents as dry, red, recurrent rashes on the insides of elbows and knees, although
blistering, cracking of skin and involvement of other body parts may also be present.
Eczema can be itchy and painful, and is often triggered by exposure to various
environmental irritants or allergy. Psoriasis is a skin condition suspected to involve
immune attack of healthy cells that can be passed down through families. This
condition can present as itchy, dry, thickened patches on the pointy parts of elbows
and knees covered with flaking skin. Nail and joint changes may also be associated
with psoriasis. All of these conditions can generally be diagnosed by a medical
professional using signs and symptoms.
Naturopathic Medicine works to identify and treat the underlying cause of
disease using natural therapies. Skin conditions are often closely with diet, but a
naturopathic doctor will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment
plan tailored to your case. Modalities that may be used for the skin conditions listed
above may be topical and internal herbal therapies, traditional Chinese medicine
and acupuncture, clinical nutrition and supplement interventions if appropriate,
stress management, and lifestyle considerations including diet. Further assessment
of the root cause of your condition will help dictate which therapies may be most
appropriate for you.
